My Little White Dress
Last weekend I had an all white wedding to attend and as a busy entrepreneur, that still works part-time doing freelance work, I rarely have time to design and sew clothes for my self. Nevertheless I felt inspired to design and sew up a dress for the special occasion. My first design idea was a halter style white dress. I had my heart set on using a woven structured fabric and chiffon. I shopped at the local fabric store and found the perfect fabric. I failed to look at both sides and when I got home I noticed two things, the fabric was not a true white in natural light and second the side I liked was not the right side of the fabric. This normally would be okay, I would just flip the fabric and use the wrong side of it! However, this fabric’s right side would be way to hot against my body for the 98-degree weather that was predicted on weather.com. So off to the fabric store again! I found my final fabric choice, a twill woven with some stretch in it. I will also continue to use the chiffon.
My final design ended up being a u-neck dress with a deep V in the back. I added an industrial exposed zipper with a small waist chiffon tie detail. I finished the pattern fairly quickly, cut the fabric out with no problems or mistakes. The next step was to start sewing which is a bitter sweet task for me because most of the time I do not have the patience to sew details like the narrow edge finishing on the chiffon or the clean finished rolled hem. As I put extra effort in sewing, so I can avoid mistakes and re-dos all is great and THEN! I come to the neckline and armholes. I cannot remember, for the life of me, how to sew the lining in to get clean finished neckline and armholes. After a quick look at my notes and a Google search I got it and completed my little white cocktail dress.
It was the perfect little white day dress for the perfect intimate backyard wedding! I enjoyed everything from the great weather, to the lemon cupcakes, to the amazing guest I met. Congratulations to Quetzalcoatl and Jennifer Alvarez! Best wishes to you both on your new journey together.
